PhD in Biotechnology Application Information

Thank you for your interest in the Biotechnology PhD program at Lakehead University. 

Admission Requirements

Students must have completed a Masterís Degree in one of the following:
  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Allied Discipline

Students in the first year of a Masterís Degree may apply for transfer into the PhD in Biotechnology provided that they have successfully completed 1 FCE of course work and have had their research proposal approved by their thesis committee. Students interested in a Master's Degree at Lakehead University should visit Graduate Studies for more information and should fill out the Graduate Studies Application Form.

Applications to the PhD program in Biotechnology are all completed online through the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Follow the application process as outlined on the website.

Choosing a Supervisor

We recommend that prospective students contact a potential supervisor prior to submitting an application. Your potential supevisor may be included in the Statement of Research Interest required as part of the application package, and can enhance the likelihood of admittance.

Application Deadlines

Although applications are accepted on a continual basis, we recommend that interested applicants submit a complete applicaiton package by the following dates:
  • For a Fall start (September)     February 1
  • For a Winter start (January)     September 30
  • For a Spring start (May):         January 31

Required Application Documents

In order for your application package to be considered complete, you must submit one (1) completed copy of each of the following:
  • The Graduate Studies Application Form (filled in online)
  • The Graduate Studies Reference Forms ( provide contact emails for 3 references)
  • Official Transcript and Proof of Degree
  • Curriculum Vitae (description)
  • Statement of Research Interest (1 Page)
  • Official English Test Results (If required)

Any outstanding documentation from the list above will prevent your application from being considered for admission.
